COMMENTS: For the benefit of visitors to our "Band for Britain" Guest Book and for Mr Peter Butterley (E-mail of 26.03.10) in particular; I would like to say that during my time as band secretary (just starting my 36th year), we have never "encouraged" players from other bands to leave and join us. The players who joined during the TV series were new registrations and, with the exception of one, all left as soon as the cameras stopped rolling; which was last November. In addition to this one, we also have four ex-Dinnington registered players who, because we are now able to contest again, transferred back to the band. I can't see where this is causing other bands to suffer because their players are joining us. Finally, "No," Mr Butterley, we don't have any spare tuba players. in fact we are short of a BBb bass player!

COMMENTS: Our brass band has been looking for the music of a march called The Smuggler. The band is over two hundred years old and played this march at every outing up to the fifties, The band members at that time got so fed up of playing it that they buried the music in the local cemetary. The present Band Master Willie Flood has been trying without success to secure the parts. Can you help.

COMMENTS: Hi to one and all, glad to see you are getting on so well. Dinnington Band and myself go back a long way and I take a look every now and then at the site and just wanted to wish you all the luck for the future after the bad patch you endured following the debacle with your previous encumbant. I have even thought about getting the Sop out again and coming along for a blow! If you need a kit player for any jobs let me know and I will see what I can do (you know me, I will help out on any instrument if I am not too busy). Let's hope you can make the frame at Bradford, nothing much to beat by the look of it! We might see you at the finals if the result goes our way also. Good luck from Dave and Daniel.

COMMENTS: Hi there, I would just like to comment on your wonderful website. As an ex horn player, i visited the contest at Hardraw and whilst i congratulate your band on it's marvellous performance, there was no possible way that your band only came third. After all the widespread gossip on the net and around the banding world about the BBC buying a band for you, i firmly believe that had the BBC not been there that day a truer result would have been given ie the Dinnington Band would have won. Your uniforms whilst a little garish in colour are certainly very eyecatching but perhaps can be smartened up a little with a tie? I shall be following your progress very carefully guys and watching out for the programme. You seem to have a very cheerful band. Do i recognise your Principal cornet player? I think she once played with a Nottingham based band called Newstead in the mid nineties when she was around 20 years old if so her name is Sally i believe. I know her quite well, please pass on my regards. Just remember guys after all is said and done there will be a lot of jealous people out there wishing they had this opportunity so they are bound to cause waves. Just ride them until the waters calm. All the very very best and good luck. Mrs Sandy Smethirst

COMMENTS: Hi there, remember me? Been keepng an eye on your progress with this band reforming programme. and pleased to see things are going well! You may know that I was contacted about returning to the band which was something I couldn't consider full time (I am happy at Stannington and they are doing well). but I wanted to let you know if you need a sop to help out on jobs etc, all you have to do is ask! I noticed your advert for a sop player, I'd be more than happy to help when I can, I enjoyed my time at Dinnington and will always help if I'm needed. Bye for now.

COMMENT: Hello there, I have been looking at the various web sites of brass bands in Yorkshire trying to find old friends I used to play with when I was in the Army. I have noticed you have a player called Jess Marshall is he the same player who played euphonium for the PWO? if so can you ask him to e-mail me. If it is him has he still got the melted chocolate tone he used to have? All of the band never told him but he could bring tears to a glass eye when he played. Hope it is him. Good luck with the band for the future Gedgie

COMMENT: GDay from Australia.... My name is Annette Dinning and whilst surfing the net ...i came across a village called Dinnington ...imagine my surprise to find such a name and to find that they have a brass band. You see i am part of a Brass Band in New South Wales Australia called the Liverpool City Brass. (Yes you have heard right...although not as famous as the one in the UK) I had just seen the Black Dyke Band play on their Australian Tour. Well what a night..So with that in mind i went searching for information on brass bands overseas. So upon reading your website i see that you have the infamous Dr Childs working with you and working to reestablish the band. We too are under going a re establishment. We had just 15 playing members two years ago and now we hve built to 32 in the senior band and 15 in the training band. So i will watch the Dinnington Band with interest. Thank you for your time and hope to see you keep banding. Annette

Comment: Thank you for the opportunity of being able to take part, albeit only in a supportive position at the venue in the Barleycroft Village pub last night (01.08.2009). You all did Sue Perkins, her production team and Dr. Nick. Childs proud. Sue could not keep still, the team were into everything but not invading anyones space, the Band was 'jumping' with Dr. Childs showing his expert ability of bringing out the best of his players by the way he showed his appreciation of them. We could have listened to more. Thanks to Darren too for his attentiveness and humour during the time whilst the Band prepared to be filmed. Well done all.

Comment: Do you have any historical photos/documents? My grandfather Harold George Turner was a surface worker at Dinnington in the early 20s. Earlier, he had been a professional musician (trombone) playing in bands such as the Bostock and Wombwell Circus Band, ships' bands (eg. SS Ceylon) - I presume he would have played in the Dinnington Colliery Band?
