WELCOME TO DINNINGTON COLLIERY TRAINING BAND
Over the years, learners of any age have been taught to play, free of charge, on instruments provided by the band and this policy still applies today.
The original Junior Band was formed in 1950 by the late Mr George Sykes, Musical Director of the Senior Band and rehearsed in the pigeon loft in the stables courtyard at Athorpe Hall, Dinnington. This building is still in use today, but is now known as part of the Dinnington Veterinary Practice. Within two to three years, every member of the junior band had progressed to the senior band and when, at about this same time, Mr Sykes left Dinnington; the junior band ceased to exist. A number of the band are still either playing, or conducting, today; quite a legacy to Mr Sykes!
In January 2002, following a grant from the Coalfields Regeneration Trust, a Saturday morning music club was launched which is held at 09.30 in the bandroom, Market Place, Dinnington. The club provides free brass tuition for both children and adults of any age in the South Rotherham Area, who wish to play an instrument. From within this club, which is run by the senior band solo tenor horn player, Mrs Joanne Brookes-Wright, a training band was launched and, at recent auditions, a number of members were promoted to the senior band. They are, hopefully, the first of many who will progress through the system to become long-serving, good, efficient and valued players.
Anyone interested in joining the club, please see our 'Band Contacts' page.
